Over 93,000 farmers in India are benefiting from the PM-KUSUM scheme, which provides solar pumps for irrigation, cutting diesel costs and promoting sustainability. Andhra Pradesh’s new initiative offers free solar power for pump sets, while Puducherry plans to distribute free solar pumps soon. The scheme aims to reduce electricity expenses and enhance farmers’ income through renewable energy.
New Solar Pump Scheme Empowers Indian Farmers
In a significant push toward sustainable agriculture, the Indian government’s PM-KUSUM scheme has transformed irrigation for over 93,062 farmers by providing solar pumps, drastically reducing reliance on costly diesel-powered systems. Launched to promote renewable energy in agriculture, the scheme offers up to 60% subsidies and easy loans for farmers to install solar pumps ranging from 2 HP to 10 HP, depending on borewell specifications. For instance, a 2 HP pump requires a 4-inch borewell, while larger 7.5 and 10 HP pumps need an 8-inch borewell with adequate water levels. This initiative not only lowers cultivation costs but also supports environmental conservation by reducing carbon emissions from diesel pumps.
In Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu recently announced free solar power for farmers’ pump sets during a ₹1,292.74 crore development project launch in Kuppam. The state aims to install solar power in every household, eliminating electricity costs permanently. Additionally, Naidu highlighted plans to make Kuppam a milk production hub, with a ₹98,000 subsidy for backward classes to generate 3 kW of solar energy under the PM Suryagarh scheme.
Meanwhile, Puducherry’s government, led by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, is set to distribute free solar pump sets to around 6,000 eligible farmers under the En Veedu En Nilam scheme. Launched at the Botanical Garden, the initiative also promotes terrace farming and dairy production, with 3,000 beneficiaries receiving materials like seeds, fertilizers, and green shade nets in the first phase.
The PM-KUSUM scheme further allows farmers to earn additional income by selling surplus solar power to the grid, enhancing financial stability. In Madhya Pradesh, the recently launched ‘Pradhanmantri Krishak Mitra Surya Yojana’ portal enables farmers to register for solar pumps at subsidized rates, with up to 90% subsidies offered. This portal, inaugurated by Energy Minister Rakesh Shukla, aims to make farming more affordable and efficient.
The scheme’s impact is evident in its growing adoption. Posts on X highlight farmers’ relief from electricity and diesel expenses, with many praising the initiative for making irrigation cost-effective and sustainable. However, some users note that lack of awareness prevents wider participation, suggesting the government intensify outreach efforts.
As India moves toward renewable energy, such schemes are critical for supporting farmers, reducing input costs, and promoting eco-friendly practices. The integration of solar power into agriculture underscores the government’s commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability.
